Maddy Theobald is our latest featured rider in The Unicorn Diaries! Based in Victoria, Australia, she is an up-and-coming eventing rider and all-round legend (she is also one of our ambassadors).
Describe a day in your life.
Because of my busy, varying life, I’m going to go ahead and describe a normal day for me, as well as a competition day.
During the week, on the days I plan to ride: I get up in the morning and pack my outfit ready for my ride after school, which mum then brings with her when she picks me up. When we get to the agistment, I hop out of the car, catch Freddie and walk him up to the tack area. Meanwhile my strapper extraordinaire (aka mum) gets out Freddie’s gear for me. After my ride, Freddie always gets two pieces of liquorice (three if he’s lucky!) and then gets his hard feed and hay before we leave.
How many unicorns currently occupy your stables, and who is your favourite?
Technically my family owns a total of four horses. Archie and Humphrey, who were mum’s horses and now live in retirement with a nice lady. Casper, who was my pony and is now ridden by a little 10-year-old rider having fun. And lastly Freddie, who I stole from mum when she injured herself and haven’t given him back yet (it’s been 2 years..)
My favourite…? Well, Casper will forever be my heart horse, however Freddie means a lot to me too. So they’re my two favourites.
What is something that your unicorn does to make you smile?
Freddie’s little things that make me smile include:
Counting how many pieces of liquorice he’s had and if it isn’t 2 or more… he won’t leave you alone!
He also squeals and pigroots whenever he hears the bell to start a show jump round, or the starter counting down before cross country.
What are your riding dreams/goals?
One day it’d be an absolute honour to represent Australia at the Olympics or WEG and hopefully complete a 5* event.
What are your favourite pair of Two White Socks, and why?
OMG… this is hard. I’d have to say either ‘Seedy Watermelon’ or ‘Dancing Avocado’! The summery vibes of the watermelons and the OG vibes of the avocado just give me life!
